An afternoon cuisine Preparation -Biryani

With the inspiration from my mom, I tried out a recipe from one of the famous cuisines from ancient India. It was indeed a challenging recipe because I am a beginner. Many people in my country are already familiar with the popularity of this dish. It is a historical and ancient dish that has been part of my country. Although, there are different theories that this dish has been originated from various countries. Some believe its main root is linked to Persians/Arabs.


Now, I am going to introduce the dish with a long history. It is widely known all over the world as “Biryani”. It might appear when one look at the procedure, it is quite simple. However, there is one important process that goes into preparing this dish exactly as the restaurant-style. It requires the cook to understand the exact quantity of rice to water ratio. There are multiple ways to prepare Biryani. All these come with the cost of electricity, gas, or appliances.

In this article, I will not share with you how to make biryani but my experiences and ideas that beginners need to be aware of when making it.





Practice makes a man perfect is a saying most of us know. If someone can share their experience and explain which worked better for them. That would tremendously reduce your time and effort on the same task. So, I decided to share my strategies to make you more successful to prepare best biryani ever.


The key to succeed in good biryani involves several factors. It requires a good understanding of the water to rice ratio that can ensure the rice is cooked dry and still grainy. You may try out the appropriate ration by using a pressure cooker technique or traditional pot cooking.


A good way to understand rice to water ratio is a trial and error method. Yes, the very method which is used in many theories development. Take a glass of rice and cook it with say a glass of water in the pressure cooker or rice cooker or pot cooking. Observe the result in both pressure cooking and rice cooking. Unlike, the pot cooking may require more water but you can always watch out on that. So, once the ratio of water to rice is determined now you can use the approach for your actual biryani cooking. With this trial and error, we not only saved us from the failure of cooking biryani but also assessed how much quantity of rice you may require for your entire family.


Another important ingredient, your selection of spices. It needs to be the right combination of flavor with spices. By using the most important spices you not only get the taste of the restaurant style at home but also are able to enjoy it very well. I recommend using a small spice grinder and coarsely making a paste with ginger, garlic, black pepper, and cardamom. I personally like to use this mixture for marinating meat.
